Hello. In an effort to keep the Moment-um going, I thought I’d talk about the consequences of my previous post. Spoiler alert, it’s watching more television.
I’ve realised that my love of TV does not spring from nowhere, it really was an important part of my upbringing (and downbringing, I pulled a large faux-wood cathode ray monstrosity down on top of me as a youngster careening about in a baby-walker).
My mum and dad both love television, in their own ways. If they find a show they both enjoy, it will be consumed voraciously, but the finding of something that suits them as a Televigion pair is the trick. The Televigion Dad has a low tolerance for a new show, unless it truly grabs him. The Televigion Mum, as you’ll know if you ever listened to our podcast, is willing to give most things a go, and enjoys the comfort of something on in the background. There’s definitely more to say on the way we choose to watch TV, what we want from it, and where we learned to watch, but this is all a diversion.
The Televigion Mum enjoyed my post about Full House, and we ended up messaging about sitcoms from her formative years. She also grew up in a family unit that shared TV experiences. For sitcoms she remembers The Liver Birds as a favourite, and this moved us on to Just Good Friends (which she then watched all of on Sky) and Butterflies (which I watched episode 1 of as it’s on iPlayer)1. I think it’s really important to have conversations about TV, and remember our legacy and history of experiences with TV. It should also include the bad experiences too! The Televigion Mum never enjoyed Love Thy Neighbour though it was a family watch, and I have never enjoyed Will and Grace, though it was part of our Friday night schedule at home.
So, a little bit of interaction. Let’s have more! Let me know any thoughts you have.
1 I enjoyed it. It was glaring that Geoffrey Palmer barely had to move to get a huge laugh from the audience, and Wendy Craig got very little response despite working hard. I hope that balance shifted once it entered the public consciousness and people knew she was the lead. I did feel some recognition and must have seen repeats at some point in my growing up. Probably worth a full watch and post on here at some point.
