Well, this is almost certainly the definition of shouting into the (empty) void. I lament the loss of what Twitter used to be for receiving (mostly) and giving (sporadically) and have found no replacement. But I want to get back to writing about the hallowed screen, so whether you’re reading this or not (you’re not), I’m going to start. I suppose a positive spin is that it couldn’t be lower stakes.
(Also, maybe I could claim it as Art for No One, but there’s not enough intention from me…
I do highly recommend the linked video, and Jacob Geller in general)
So following the format of a nine year old blog post (State of the Televigion Union 2015) here is a list of series and seasons currently underway in this updated Televigion house, in order of most recently watched.
- Doctor Who Series Ncuti (much less ambiguous than Season 1 or Series 14) (BBC iPlayer)
- Finished now, but worth mentioning for flashes of brilliance in the writing, charming and engaging leads who need a bit of bedding in, and being great, if not quite as good as I wanted it to be.
- Foundation Season 1 (AppleTV+)
- We’ve watched one episode and it was exactly the serious and slightly snooty sci-fi I wanted when we watched it. We haven’t watched any more though…
- Atlanta Season 3 (Disney+)
- The very definition of “have to be in the mood”, and I will almost always need to read articles to understand allusions and cultural references that are not mine. But it can reach heights of funny other shows cannot. I haven’t watched any for more than two weeks…
- Community Season 2 (binge rewatch, complete DVD boxset)
- A purchase made when I started a rewatch just as it left streaming, and it is solidly good, but not as brilliant as I remember, excepting occasional episodes (S1E7 Introduction to Statistics made me cry with how perfectly it achieves the platonic ideal of “Community”)
- Doctor Who: The Collection Season 15 and Season 2 (blu-ray collections)
- With all of these Collections, I prefer the extras to the actual episodes, so occasionally watch on 1.5x speed (BLASPHEMER) or while doing something else. The Sunmakers episode 2 is on in the corner right now… (I’ve been given a push to get back to them as Season 25 is now out for pre-order… and I’ve still got Season 9 and Season 20 to watch…)
- The Acolyte (Disney+)
- One and a half episodes proved to me that I didn’t care what was going on. Bring on Andor S2 instead.
- Meet the Richardsons (UKTV Play)
- Harmless, formulaic and comfortable when life was in some of the worst turmoil. But its welcome was worn out before the end of series 2.
- Alma’s Not Normal (BBC iPlayer)
- Charmingly odd, I watched the pilot when it came out and never explored the series until Sophie Willan (creator and star) was brilliant on Taskmaster. For me, the ‘sit’ feels too well worn and is servicing “what BBC comedy is looking for”, so inhibits the ‘com’. I’d watch Sophie Willan take on another ‘sit’ in a heartbeat though.
If anyone is out there and has any thoughts, let me know what you think of these shows, or anything else you’re watching.
It’s good to be back.
